Loyalty vs Unfaithfulness

The highest spiritual quality, the noblest property of mind a man can have, is this of loyalty…a man with no loyalty in him, with no sense of love or reverence or devotion due to something outside and above his poor daily life, with its pains and pleasures, profits and losses, is as evil a case as man can be. – Algernon Charles Swinburne

Loyalty means:
1.  faithfulness to commitments or obligations
2. having a strong feeling of allegiance
3. the act of binding yourself (emotionally or intellectually) to a course of action

Synonyms for Loyalty: faithfulness, dependability, allegiance, steadfastness
Antonyms for Loyalty: wavering, inconsistent, unsteady, unfaithful

What the Bible says about Loyalty:
Proverbs 17:17 A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
1 Corinthians 16:13-14Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.
1 Corinthians 4:2 Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy.
Proverbs 3:3 Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart.

Examples From The Bible:
David (loyal to Saul) 1 Samuel 24:6-10
Peter  Matthew 26:35 Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same.  NOTE: Peter did deny Jesus, but he sincerely repented and went on to become a martyr for Christ as did many of the disciples.
Loyalty to Joshua  Joshua 1:16-18
Acts 5:29 But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.
Job Job 42:8 You have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has.
Abraham Genesis 22:12 Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.

The Example of Jesus To Us:
Matthew 18:15 “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother.
Matthew 24:45-47 “Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions.

Personal Thoughts and Application:
The picture above is of our dog, Roxie.  Roxie, like most dogs is a very faithfully loyal servant to the human species.  We used to think that she was a wimpy dog because she was so submissive to us, and she never meets a stranger.  We figured she might lick something/someone to death as her only defense.  One day, that changed, however, as 2 dogs who frequently came in our yard visited while we were outside.  Roxie perceived a threat from one of the dogs and she gave a vicious warning that lasted a few minutes before she went into fight mode.  Later that year, she caught a possum that wandered close to the house, and has targeted a few rattle snakes as well.  Each time she has spotted a dangerous creature, she has alerted us.  Yes, when it comes to serious situations, we can count on Roxie.  But Roxie, loyal as she is, will not stay near the house.  She goes into exploration mode and wanders off quickly.  When we realize she has left and does not come back when called, my hubby shoots his gun and that single gun shot sound reminds her she is supposed to be home.

How many Christians are like Roxie in their loyalty?  Tried and true when something intense is going on, but then wandering and straying when the spiritual realm is not holding our interest.  Does God have to shoot a loud gun of warning to remind us where our place is, or just affectionately call our name to get our attention and bring us home?

PRAYER FOR YOU:  May you be loyal to the God you serve and cling to His truths no matter what conditions and situations are around you.  May you be loyal to the people and things God has entrusted to your care, and always treat them and care for them according to God’s will.
