Responsibility vs Unreliability

This is WEEK 38 of the Character Development Series I am doing for 2012.  So glad you stopped by!

If you’re looking for someone dependable, caring, truthful, loving, reliable, loyal, God is available. – Unknown

Commitment. This is my favorite word because in some way, people who are committed are always much more interesting and much more reliable, and much more, I would say, deep than people who are not.  –Carlos Ghosn

Not the maker of plans and promises, but rather the one who offers faithful service in small matters.  This is the person who is most likely to achieve what is good and lasting.  ~Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Promises are like crying babies in a theater, they should be carried out at once.  ~Norman Vincent Peale

Responsible means:
1. having an obligation to do something as part of a job or role

2.Being the primary cause of something and so able to be blamed or credited for it

Synonyms for Responsible: obligated, pledged, accountable. liable
Antonyms for Responsible: exempt, immune, irresponsible, unreliable

What the Bible Says About Being Responsible:
Col 3:23
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men

1 Cor 4:2 Moreover, it is [essentially] required of stewards that a man should be found faithful [proving himself worthy of trust].
1 Cor 1:9 God is faithful (reliable, trustworthy, and therefore ever true to His promise, and He can be depended on); by Him you were called into companionship and participation with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Deut 25:15 15 You must have accurate and honest weights and measures, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
Proverbs 10:9 The man of integrity walks securely, but he who takes crooked paths will be found out.

Examples From The Bible:
God is faithful to give Abraham and Sarah a  child: (Genesis 18:14)
Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.”
Job mentioned to Satan as an example of a responsible servant; (Job 2:3 3) Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason.”

Ruth pledges loyalty to Naomi: (Ruth 1:16)  But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.

The Example of Jesus to Us:
Faith is only as reliable and helpful as the trustworthiness of its object; and Christian faith is powerful and effective because the object of faith, Jesus Christ, is infinitely powerful and absolutely dependable. Christian faith never fails, because the One in whom that faith is placed never fails. —-John Macarthur
Luke 16:10 “One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.
John 4:34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.

Personal Thoughts and Application:
When you drop your child off at daycare or school, do you want the assurance that responsible people will care for them ’til your return?  When you take a sick pet to the vet, do you want to know that the vet will do all they can to get your pet well?  When someone makes a promise to you or contracts to perform a service for you, do you want to know they will carry through on that promise or contract and be honest?  Why, of course you do.  In the Bible, it is clear that God wants us to be responsible and reliable.  We should be careful about what promises we make, and not promise what we can not fulfill.  We should not cut corners or be dishonest in our jobs and dealings with others.  We should be that person that can be counted on to do the right thing, to attend to a task well and to be dependable to come through with obligations and responsibilities.  God is always there for us, dependable and trustworthy.  When we are responsible, we reflect His standards.

Prayer For You:  May you be the person that others can rely on to show dedication, responsibility and reliability.  May you honor your word and not make promises lightly.  May you be dedicated and trustworthy in your relationships, work ethics and day to day conduct.  May your reflect God’s standards of responsibility to your family, friends and others who you have the opportunity to serve and influence.
