Self Control vs Self Indulgence

This is WEEK 41 of the Character Development Series I am doing for 2012.  So glad you stopped by!

God is waiting eagerly to respond with new strength to each little act of self-control, small disciplines of prayer, feeble searching after him. And his children shall be filled if they will only hunger and thirst after what he offers.  –Richard Holloway

Discipline weighs ounces, regret weighs tons.  ~Author Unknown

The cyclone derives its powers from a calm center.  So does a person.  ~Norman Vincent Peale

Self-control means:
1. restraint exercised over one’s own impulses, emotions, or desires
2.the ability to control one’s emotions, behavior, and desires in order to obtain some reward, or avoid some punishment

for Self-control: self-discipline, restraint, containment

Antonyms for Self-control: rashness, agitation, undisciplined

What The Bible Says About Self-control:
Proverbs 25:28
A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.

1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
Galations 5: 22 -23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
1 Cor 9: 24 -27 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.
2 Tim 1:7 For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

Examples From The Bible:
Daniel 1: 8 But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king’s food, or with the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself.
Genesis 39: Joseph ran from Potiphar’s wife and did not give in to her enticements.
Example of Lack of Self-Control: (Genesis 3:6)  Adam and Eve in the Garden as they were both tempted to disobey God and taste the forbidden fruit.

The Example Of Jesus To Us:
Matt 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world.
Matt 4: 1 – 11:  Jesus Is Tempted In The Wilderness (40 days and 40 nights)

Personal Thoughts and Application:
What sets apart a mature child of God is their self-control in a world full of temptations and enticements, cravings and desires.  This self-control is not easy, and it comes by walking closely in step with God’s spirit and listening to His voice.  God wants us to learn discipline and take an active part in developing self-control but he does not want us to confuse self-control with self-reliance.  The Bible speaks about many areas that we should strive to have control: our speech, our thoughts, our responses, our decisions, our finances, our lifestyle choices, etc.  Self-control requires a daily battle to do the right things, say no to the wrong things, use moderation and wisdom and in all things to put Him first.  We may fail many times, but that is part of the process and that is why God asks us to endure and not give up, and to seek His forgiveness and assistance so that we can press on.

PRAYER FOR YOU:  May you seek to identify areas in which you need to develop self -control and may you seek God’s help and guidance in being able to develop the discipline necessary to master these areas.  May your self -control not become self-reliance but keep you ever mindful of your need for His power and involvement in your life.
