A Plain Christmas Package

2b he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,istock_000003044603xsmall
and no beauty that we should desire him.
3 He was despised and rejected by men;
a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief;
and as one from whom men hide their faces
he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,and with his wounds we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” Isaiah 53:1-6

When I read these verses, I think about how different it could have been.  He could have arrived on Earth in splendor and beauty, with riches unfathomable at his command.  He could have had servants and been given a throne for men to worship him.  He could have come in such glory that no angel declaration would have been needed for all the Earth to know that He was the One…the Savior….the King ….our God.

BUT…He Didn’t.  Instead, HE CHOSE:
to trade beauty and splendor for a form that none considered special or handsome in any way
to trade riches and unlimited resources for a stable and a manger with parents to raise him that were very poor
to trade glory and honor for rejection, ridicule, and betrayal
to trade comfort and a heavenly dwelling for an earthly tribulation, torture and death.
to trade being clothed in Righteousness, for the tainted stench of MY Iniquity, MY Failures, MY Disobedience….MY SIN.

How thankful I am this Christmas Season that He gave up so much FOR ME.
How could I not meditate on this eternal gift  and embrace it fully.
When all the pretty packages are wrapped and placed under the tree….
My heart will find the most excitement and delight in unwrapping…yet again
The Wonder Of That Plain Christmas Package given all those years ago.
